The Boss comes to Charleston

August 15, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Bruce springsteenBruce Springsteen will be in Charleston Saturday night playing to a sold out crowd at the North Charleston Coliseum. Tickets sold out in nanoseconds for what will likely be the concert of the year in Charleston.

I noticed some positives with ticket resales, additional proceeds being donated to charity. And some businesses are using the highly coveted tickets to thank their best clients.

It should be a great show.

Charleston weather

Summer in Charleston is hot and humid but not as humid as you might think. The weather forecast in summer is usually highs in the 90’s and lows in the 70’s, mostly sunny in the day with a chance of pop up thunderstorms in the afternoon. The weather forecasters don’t have to change the forecast very much each day.

But today will be one of the hottest days of the year with temps close to 100 and heat indexes close to 110.

Keep the air conditioning running and stay cool.

Sourthern Magnolia

The beautiful flower of a Southern Magnolia. The street that I live on is landscaped with magnolias.

One of our favorite restaurants in Charleston is Magnolias owned by Hospitality Management Group and Chef Donald Barickman.

… are just getting started this spring.

crepe myrtles I’ve always followed Southern Living’s helpful tips on how to trim my crepe myrtles and every year they just get more and more beautiful.

If you don’t have one or more, now is a great time to buy a crepe myrtle.

Although there isn’t much to see just yet,I’ll post another picture in the summer and you’ll be able to see just how beautiful they grew this year.

Springtime in Charleston

March 10, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Sports, culture and fun, take your pick(s) this spring in the Charleston area.

With the Southern Conference Basketball Tournament ending today and after the very successful Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in February and the bigger and better Food + Wine Festival last weekend, there are some great events to look forward to this spring in Charleston.

It will be a busy weekend as always with the Flowertown Festival in Summerville on April 4th through April 6th and the Cooper River Bridge Run from Mount Pleasant to Downtown Charleston on Saturday morning April 5th. Look for the usual quarter of a million visitors to enjoy the azaleas in full bloom and the arts and crafts festival in Summerville and some of the best runners in the world on the new Cooper River Bridge.

The Family Circle Cup Tennis Championship will be held at Daniel Island April 12th – 20th with all the top ladies professionals here as always. Making a return visit to the tennis center in May is the AVP Volleyball Tournament and beach party on May 8th through May 10th.

Do you enjoy golf. The finest ladies golf professionals in the world will be playing the demanding Arnold Palmer designed course at Rivertowne Country Club in Mount Pleasant for one of the largest purses on the LPGA tour. The Ginn Tribute Hosted by Annika returns May 26 through June 1.

Last but never least is the Spoleto Festival USA now in its 36th year at various venues throughout Charleston for 17 days and nights from May 23 through June 8 offering opera, music, theatre, dance and special events.

A blend of old and new in downtown Charleston real estate

February 21, 2008 | Leave a Comment

Downtown Charleston luxury real estate includes many historic homes for sale In downtown Charleston a little further up the Peninsula near the “hip and happening” Upper King Street design district and near the College of Charleston and MUSC, many homes are being renovated and lots of new construction is being developed in the area.

The area has been gentrifying for the past few years with many new restaurants and stores opening to serve the new residents of the area.

When you think of Historic Downtown Charleston, you think of the High Battery, the stately homes South of Broad, the many historic homes from the antebellum era and some of the finest luxury real estate in the country.

new urban living in Midtown Charleston Historic looks with modern amenities

But now there are many new housing choices in downtown, and while not inexpensive, offering more affordable alternatives to buyers who are interested in living in the city rather than the suburban areas of Charleston. We are seeing both baby boomer empty nesters who are selling their homes in the suburbs along with members of Gen X and Gen Y choosing to live in the city with easy access to fine dining, shopping, culture and all that Charleston has to offer.

Mobil 4 and 5 star winners in CharlestonThe Charleston area once again won lots of stars from the Mobil Travel Guide. The Woodlands Resort and Inn and The Dining Room at Woodlands in Summerville once again won 5 stars in both the hotel and dining categories. Winning 4 stars for both hotel and dining was Charleston Place and  Charleston Grill. Other dining winners included the Ocean Room at the new Sanctuary Hotel at the Kiawah Island Resort along with Circa 1886 and my personal favorite restaurant in Charleston, Peninsula Grill. Not only is Charleston a great place to visit, it is a wonderful place to live.

Charleston gardens bloom all year

January 20, 2008 | Leave a Comment

geraniums in bloomAs you read this blog, you’ll see pictures of our garden as well as pictures of gardens from around the Charleston area. These are photos of our geraniums, they’re almost 4 years old and when it gets cold at night like it will this evening, we’ll cover them and hope for the best but we’ve been very fortunate thus far. One of the most wonderful things about living in Charleston is our mild winters which allow our gardens to bloom all year.

Southern Living loves Charleston

January 12, 2008 | 2 Comments

Southern livingSouthern Living Magazine loves Charleston and so do its readers. Pick up a copy of Southern Living and two out of three issues will include something about Charleston with articles about homes, gardens, dining and events or activities occurring in our beautiful city.

The most recent Southern Living featured the Annual Readers’ Choice Awards and Charleston was voted the Favorite Southern City by the readers beating out Savannah and Atlanta.

Charleston also placed well in other categories including the first and third spots for seafood restaurants. Get ready to line up for a table at Hyman’s or make a reservation at Hank’s. In the splurge restaurant category, Magnolias came in second to Commander’s Palace in New Orleans (if I might make a suggestion, The Peninsula Grill owned by Hank Holliday of Hank’s with executive chef Robert Carter is superb). Finally, Charleston was voted second in shopping (King Street is an adventure in spending money!)
